Sakura Season

Cherry Blossom (sakura) season is back in Tokyo, the most anticipated and brief season on the year has finally come to town.

Large parks are the most popular places to enjoy the cherry trees, but there is always an area not far from work or home with of a large number of cherry trees, making it easy to go out and enjoy the season.

As it is usual every year, large number of people goes out to enjoy the the sakuras, sitting under the trees, on the open tables set by the restaurants or just walking around the blooming trees, giving the city a great ambiance.

Sakura season

Cherry tree blossom season has started, flowers are at full bloom, coloring the streets and parks with a beautiful pink tone, public areas are full of people enjoying the cherry trees “sakura”, even on weekdays.




Some of the cherry trees have passed full bloom and the falling petals create an effect of falling snow every time the wind blows, carpeting the ground with the pink petals, it is unmatchable experience to walk under the “pink snow”.



I did my cherry tree blossom viewing this time at ToshiNogyou park, or city agricultural park in the adachi prefecture, the park has four different types of sakuras a greenhouse and a large number of seasonal flowers. There is also an old house at the premises, marked as an important cultural property by the Adachi ward; unfortunately, access is closed as a security measure due to the earthquake and the aftershocks.



Although the rolling blackouts are suspended more of the public cherry tree viewing festivals have been cancelled to save energy and water, nevertheless you still are allowed to organize your personal viewing gathering.

Hanami at Showa memorial park

The weather has been unpredictable in the last couple of weeks; it has been raining and cold most of the week, everybody has been cautiously planning for the weekend hanami or cherry blossom viewing. I visited the Showa memorial park with a weather forecast of cloudy/rain.




Showa memorial park, or showa kinen, was established in 1983 to commemorate the 50 anniversary of the Showa emperor. The park extends now to 163 hectares of beautifully maintained gardens, ponds and barbeque areas.



The sakura or cherry trees were at full blossom and the many families were enjoying the park by the traditional Japanese picnic under the cherry tree or hanami.



I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the open field area and the number of people enjoying the day.




The park has several flower areas a large pond and a canal.




There is also a beautiful Japanese garden area that, excluding the house under reparation, was just perfect.





But the star of the day was undoubtedly the cherry blossom, and fortunately the rain didn’t spoil the day.

Spring is almost here

Spring is just around the corner, although it did snow a couple of days ago, the good weather is back now.




The plum trees at shinobazu pond in Ueno park are at the end of their blooming, a sure sign of the soon arrival of the sakura cherry blossom .





Some of the sakura trees on the entrance and at the park are starting to bloom, and the park has starting the preparations for the hanami or cherry blossom viewing.
